Gynecomastia

A recent article in a popular men’s health magazine focused on Gynecomastia and the physiological effects this condition can cause for men.

Gynecomastiamost commonly referred to as “Man Boobs”, is a condition that makes breast tissue swell in boys and men, causing overdeveloped or enlarged breasts. It can happen when the balance of two hormones in your body (testosterone and estrogen) is thrown off. In many cases the exact cause of the hormone imbalance is not known, however some reasons may be a result of disease or injury to organs that produce hormones, thyroid issues, obesity, some prescription medications, and drugs such as anabolic steroids. Marijuana use can also cause excess breast tissue in males.

Gynecomastia can cause emotional discomfort, embarrassment, and lack of self-confidence. Some men avoid certain physical activities, such as water sports, and intimacy to hide their condition.

Gynecomastia surgery reduces breast size, flattening and enhancing the chest contours.

Gynecomastia surgery is considerable when alternative medical treatments fail to correct the condition. Gynecomastia surgery candidates should be healthy, non-smokers, non-drug users, have relatively normal weight, and stabilized breast development. Men considering gynecomastia surgery should have realistic expectations, a positive outlook, and specific goals in mind for improving the physical symptoms of gynecomastia.

Gynecomastia surgery costs may include:

  • Surgeons Fee
  • General Anesthesia
  • Facility Fees
  • Post-Surgery Support Garments
  • Prescription Medications

Dr. Webster’s fee for gynecomastia surgery is approximately $4,000.00. This type of surgical procedure and any complication resulting from the procedure is not typically covered by health insurance plans. Dr. Webster’s experience and your comfort with him are just as important as costs when planning to have gynecomastia surgery. Dr. Webster and his staff will prepare you well for your surgical procedure! During the consultation Dr. Webster will evaluate your health status, discuss potential risk factors and complications, examine your breasts to determine any underlying cause for gynecomastia, take photographs and measurements, discuss options and recommend a course for treatment, and answer any questions.

Gynecomastia can be done using liposuction, excision, or a combination of liposuction and excision. Dr. Webster will recommend the best option for you based on the physical examination. Gynecomastia surgery is performed out-patient. Following your post-surgical instructions will be essential to the success of your surgery. You will be given specific post-operative care instructions at your pre-operative appointment and prior to your discharge. It may take some time post-operatively to see final results. Your improved upper body image will likely enhance your self-image and confidence.
